Encaustic Birds

Sunflowers and Lorikeets Series

This series explores the relationship between urban life and local wildlife. Living in Melbourne, I grow sunflowers to attract rainbow lorikeets and photograph their feeding behaviour as the basis for each work. Painted in the encaustic medium, the pieces layer molten wax and pigment to capture the luminosity of petals and the vivid motion of the birds.
Sunflowers and Lorikeets invites viewers to see how small acts of cultivation can create moments of connection between humans and the natural world.

Exploring Urban Life and Wildlife

This series delves into the intricate relationship between urban environments and the wildlife that inhabits them. Set in Melbourne, I cultivate sunflowers specifically to attract rainbow lorikeets, observing and photographing their feeding habits. These lively interactions serve as the foundation for each piece in the series.

Connection with the natural world

Sunflowers and Lorikeets encourages viewers to recognise how even modest acts of cultivation in urban settings can foster meaningful connections between people and the natural world. The series highlights the potential for harmony and interaction that exists within everyday city life.
